Football is Back in Longmont

We watched a lot of exhibition football this weekend at PJ's. It doesn't compare to the regular season or the playoffs but it's been 7 months since the Super Bowl so it will do for now.
While the Denver Broncos prepare for their 64th year in the pros, student-athletes across America are also putting in their reps. The Coach Prime era at CU-Boulder starts next month as the Buffs play their 100th season at Folsom Field. But the longest championship tradition on gridirons around here can be found at Longmont High School.
If you go inside and head towards the gym you are surrounded by a giant hall of fame and trophies celebrating high school athletics since the original school opened in 1901.
Inside the gym, among countless championship banners, hangs one that is difficult to believe. It reads:
1908 High School Football National Champions

Breckenridge Distillery is an official sponsor of the Denver Broncos. Come in for our exclusive barrel pick found only at PJ's.
The award was selected by sportswriters and announced in December of 1908. Although 115 year-old accomplishments are special, Longmont also won Colorado state championships in 1940, 1953, and 1954. But their most impressive feat came over the course of five seasons from 1988 to 1992. The Trojans won 45 straight games and captured three consecutive state titles during that span.
In recent years, rival Longmont schools Silver Creek and Skyline have also played for, or won state championships. Yet they still share a home field with Longmont at Everly-Montgomery Field in the heart of old town.
The biggest boys start their seasons in September, but Longmont hosts the defending 4A champs from Broomfield on Thursday August 24 at 7pm with as much pride and tradition on the line as there is anywhere else.
