PJ's Local Legends Series: Ken's Got Your Sports Treasures

Thu, Apr 13, 23

Ken Dahl has owned K and D's Sports Memorabilia since 2010

When Ken Dahl stops by PJ's he's usually the last customer of the night. His sports memorabilia and merchandise shop closes just one half-hour before we do. K and D's is right down the road from us but is the only store of it's kind in Longmont or Boulder.
His store first opened in the indoor mall that once stood where the Village At The Peaks is now.
"The giant food court," Ken Dahl calls it before he takes a phone call from a customer on a pleasant afternoon. A signed Mike Tyson boxing glove and a large Michael Jordan piece hang behind him. While he misses the stream of walk-up customers that an indoor mall provides, he's had success at the corner of Sherman Drive and Ken Pratt Boulevard, where he moved in 2014.
"I've hung in there," says Dahl. "The biggest thing is that this business is not a necessity. The only fear I have is the economy; you just never know."
Besides moving locations, and dealing with a recent pandemic Dahl also competes with the digital marketplace. But there are advantages to having a physical location in his industry.
"As far as hats, you have to try them on," Dahl explains. "Most of my customers buying hats online are having to ship them back. It's a headache because hats are so inconsistent on how they fit."
Even though Jordan hasn't played basketball for the Chicago Bulls in almost 25 years, their team hats are still among Dahl's top sellers. New hats often debut along with Jordan's line of Nike sneakers. But Ken's hoping to sell more Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche gear as they begin their playoff runs this week.
"If teams do well, I get sales for sure," he says. "Right now the Av's and Nuggets have been slow all year but if they make it through the first round then business will double for them."

As far as the Broncos, Ken says sales for the local NFL franchises' merchandise have slowed in the past five years, mirroring their struggles on the football field. In fact, another football team is the most popular one at his store.
"I would say the Raiders are the number-one selling team," says Dahl. "If the Broncos are winning, I sell Broncos stuff. But they've got to be winning. Raider fans are die-hard, win or lose. They could come in on a Monday after being blown out and still buy. It's all about the look."

Ken's preferred bourbon is Woodford Reserve (750ml, $40)
